1845-O WB-17 R4 Liberty Seated half dollar, PCGS AU Details, code 92 for cleaning. As we've discussed many times in the past, not all cleaned coins are created equal. Yes, this coin was cleaned ages ago, though it was likely nothing more than a wash with soap and water. Definitely not an abrasive cleaning. There are no hairlines of any magnitude, there is luster remaining, lovely, light golden toning has taken hold, and the coin's eye appeal is darn good. many (most) of you will look at this in hand and wonder what all the fuss is about!
The relatively new attribution, W-17, comes from our friend Bill Bugert's masterwork, "A Register of Liberty Seated Half Dollar Varieties, Volume lll, New Orleans Branch Mint, 1840-O to 1853-O NA". OK, that's quite a title, but it really is quite a book! This particular volume is the 3rd in the series that will soon cover all the minute die varieties of the entire series. At this time, Bill has completed works on the San Francisco, Carson City and New Orleans mints, and has recently released the 5th volume, covering the Philadelphia issues from 1839 thru 1852. It appears that perhaps two more books will complete the task! We strongly recommend that you obtain copies of these important works for your numismatic library.
DavidKahnRareCoins is your source for scarce, rare and high-quality collector coins. We are members of all leading numismatic organizations, including the ANA (Life 6503) and the prestigious Professional Numismatists Guild, better known as the PNG (David L.
